Fits $14.38 Like the Minutemen, White Denim are a versatile and wholly original trio and never appear to be trying that hard. They’re not pretty-faced rockers with aspirations of fame and fortune. They’re the beer-drinking sort, who just picked up instruments and formed a band because they could; dudes first and foremost, musicians second. But the kicker is that they’re astonishingly good. Texas bandmates Josh Block, Steve Terebecki, and James Petralli have a binding chemistry and a willingness to shift styles at the drop of a hat, as they tear through garage punk to free jazz to psychedelic to prog — sometimes in the course of a single song. Fits is an appropriate title for White Denim’s debut, not just because of the fabric reference, but also because the album is a big heaping pile of nervous fits. The snappy “I Start to Run” begins with stark bass and drums and turns into spazzy blues-based Nuggets rock, before falling into an abyss of prog-on-peyote scales. “Sex Prayer” is a blend of dubby delays and organ rock that becomes increasingly trippy, complete with a head-fake fadeout around the three-minute mark. Meanwhile, the furiously thrashing “El Hard Attack DCWYW,” with its Latino-punk eruption, is stark contrast to the acoustic sweetness of “Regina Holding Hands.” Fits seems custom-made for vinyl, with a second half that sounds like the works of a completely different band. Side one is more rambunctious (with stoner rock and garage twists), and side two is more sweet (with elements of soul, alternative, and ’70s AM rock). Neither half is at all traditional, though. USED: Nuggets: A Classic Collection From the Psychedelic Sixties $6.98 In its time, in the mid-’80s, Rhino Records’ first volume of its Nuggets series was one of the basic starting points for a collection of mid-’60s psychedelic and garage punk music, and it still holds up for content. Almost everything here is a musical touchstone of the genres, either a major chart hit or an underground classic, and the little that doesn’t really fit entirely into those categories, such as “Friday on My Mind” by the Easybeats and “Laugh Laugh” and “Just a Little” by the Beau Brummels, is still catchy enough to fit in seamlessly with the rest. The main drawback for new purchasers may be the sound — Rhino’s mastering standards were always higher than those of virtually every other company, which means that their ’80s CDs have held their value a very long time, but there are better things being done with the sound on most of this material in the early 21st century. As of 1998, thanks to a new licensing agreement, Rhino was able to issue a much-expanded version of that double album as a four-CD box and put out Nuggets From Nuggets, a 20-song highlights CD that includes five of the cuts from this CD and 15 choice additions; of the missing tracks, the Chocolate Watch Band’s “Let’s Talk About Girls” is the only hugely glaring omission, the others being a matter of subjective choice, some of which is dictated by their availability elsewhere and changing perceptions of the music. USED: One Day Remains $4.99 Alter Bridge aligns the original Creed lineup of guitarist Mark Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips, and bassist Brian Marshall with vocalist Myles Kennedy, formerly of late- ’90s modern rock hopefuls Mayfield Four. The resulting One Day Remains retains some Creed-isms, like Tremonti’s foot-on-monitor-wedge showboating, or the thickheaded riffs that unfold smoothly into elegiac, radio-ready choruses (Creed diehards are going to love “Open Your Eyes”). But Kennedy isn’t nearly as melodramatic as Scott Stapp was, and his reaching back to wail like vintage Chris Cornell fits nicely with Alter Bridge’s more aggressive moments. Witness the chunky PRS shredding of “Metalingus,” the Metallica influence in “Watch Your Words,” or the slaves and bulldozers of pounding opener “Find the Real.” Principal writers Tremonti and Kennedy don’t shy away from spiritual generalizations — believing in the promise of a new day, for example, in “Burn It Down.” There’s also the dualistic quality of the band’s name and album artwork, as well as a fold-out poster emblazoned with the title track’s lyrics. “When every wound has been opened/And in this world of give and take you must have faith.” This stuff muddies the line between old group and new; together with flourish-laden post-grunge pacesetters like “Broken Wings,” “In Loving Memory,” and “Shed My Skin,” it suggests Alter Bridge is happier courting Creed’s constituency than establishing the promise of its more metal side. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |
